“When the routine bites hard
And ambitions are low
And the resentment rides high
But emotions won’t grow
And were changing our ways,
Taking different roads
Then love, love will tear us apart again”
The excerpt is part of an 80s hit song performed by British post punk rock band Joy Division. Originally named Warsaw, the band Joy Division was known for its undistinguished punk inflected hard rock style that combines Jim Morrison of the Doors and Depeche Mode musical influences.
In May 1980, lead vocals Ian Curtis, overwhelmed with depression, committed suicide. Their album “Closer” and the hit single “Love Will Tear Us Apart” featured above, achieved the highest chart ratings in their band history. After Ian Curtis passed away, the rest of the members reformed into a band called “New Order”; thus, becoming one of the most influential bands in the 1980s and beyond.
“Confusion in her eyes that says it all.
She’s lost control.
And she’s clinging to the nearest passer by,
She’s lost control.
And she gave away the secrets of her past,
And said I’ve lost control again,
And a voice that told her when and where to act,
She said I’ve lost control again.”
G-Star Raw‘s 2009 Spring Summer campaign was inspired by the movie Control. Directed and curated by Anton Corbijn, the movie is a film adaptation from the book “Touching From A Distance” written by Deborah Curtis. Control is a film about Ian Curtis, the lead singer of the defunct Joy Division from the 1980s. The movie is filmed in black and white capturing the essence of singer Ian Curtis, the grit and dynamics of his short life and the somber exit that paved way to a reformation which eventually influenced an era.
